16 Jun ReBel Cakes: Delicious Desserts!
Stressed spelled backwards is Desserts. ReBel Ventures has officially started packaging our amazing fruit-filled cakes. When most people think of cakes, they think that deserts are delicious. Oh boy, these square bundles are so delicious!
Last Friday, we brought several cakes to Comegys Elementary School. I worked with the fruit stand crew where we decided to try a new tactic. We made the usual smoothies with kiwi, strawberries, oranges, apple juice and ice. We also created cute fruit salads that had grapes, kiwi, apples all topped with yogurt. And of course, the popular ReBel bars and Rebel seeds. However, this past Friday was special. We introduced the Comegys students to the amazing ReBel cakes. On our beautiful snack gardens, we put free samples. They disappeared within seconds. I even noticed one kids take multiple meaning he must have liked it. Every single kid said they liked it and some even said they would buy it or even eat it again. That gave us an idea! Why not try to sell the few that we brought and see if students would buy it? So we put half cakes selling for fifty cents and whole cakes that would sell for a dollar on a tray. I believe seven cakes all got sold within twenty minutes by those who had tried the free samples or a few who had not tried it.
I thought it was pretty funny because we asked the kids what they thought before eating. A majority responded that it looked liked banana bread. The irony is that there is absolutely no banana, but rather apples, oats, and craisons. Regardless, they loved the product. Now, we must entice a larger crowd and see if the product is ready for the bigger markets.
The state of Philadelphia requires that the meals in the lunch require ¼ cup of dried fruit or ½ cup of frozen fruit. These cakes have exactly that and we have made versions with both requirements. Of our norms in the kitchen is “Try it On,” which emphasizes courage for trying new things and experimenting on original products. This week, one of our crew member decided to “try it on” and create mayo made out of tofu and other healthy ingredients.
What is our next goal?
Get all the students to eat these during breakfast or lunch daily instead of the chips or even the vegetables that often go untouched.
How do we plan on doing this?
We will be conducting taste tests for the next few weeks in Comegys, Huey, and perhaps a few others elementary schools. After gathering data, our research and development team as well as marketing team with collaborate to pitch to the West Philadelphia school district to portray interest in our newest product- ReBel Cake. We want them to include them in the lunch everyday especially if the kids demand it. We saw glimpse of this last week. Now, it is time for us to prove this!
All in all, I’m excited to see the progress of the ReBel cakes this summer and I am confident that it will be a success. And if not, I know I enjoyed working on this product and seeing how much the crew enjoyed watching it develop from the start.
