This summer the ReBel crew is spending a lot of time at Comegys Community School mentoring kids for Cooking Crew Academy.
It’s a very engaging and important part of what we do at ReBel Ventures.

Why is Comegys Cooking Crew Academy Important?
Cooking Crew Academy is important because…
- It teaches kids about healthy eating
- It introduces kids to fruits, vegetables, spices, and other food items they may have never tried before
- It provides useful skill training in areas such as knife cutting and handling
- It empowers kids to practice solid values like teamwork and democracy
I could go on and on and list a number of other reasons why Cooking Crew Academy is so important.
What’s most substantial is that a at Cooking Crew Academy the kids are in control. They are the chefs. They are the ones that decide what they want to cook. They are the ones preparing and cooking the food. They are actively engaged in the entire process.
It’s one thing to solely teach kids about nutrition and food. You could sit them in front of a powerpoint or have them watch some educational videos. You could have them read a book or lecture them. But that’s not effective at all. Not in the long run.
What’s effective is immersing kids in the very thing you are trying to change or promote and giving them the support, space, and tools to learn and do. They aren’t just watching or listening, they’re doing.
Kids, who soak up any and everything like sponges, are more receptive to liking and wanting things that they were or are involved in making.
Cooking Crew Academy kids will be and probably already are more likely to want to incorporate and eat the fruits, vegetables, spices, and other foods that they have cooked with at Comegys. They have the knowledge and skills to cook these foods for themselves and can teach others. The knowledge and skills that they have gathered at Cooking Crew Academy are two things they will carry with them throughout their lives. It’s like that old saying…
