07 Aug Rebel mentors at Cooking Crew Academy
Cooking Crew Academy (CCA), held at Comegys Community School in West Philadelphia, is an after school activity that empowers kids to become young chefs by cooking healthy dishes for themselves and their peers.
The kids are given a great amount of autonomy and jump right in. They get to choose what dish they want to cook from an array of ingredients with an emphasis on vegetables.
Adult supervisors are there to oversee the activity but more importantly, our Rebel high school students attend CCA as mentors to help kids create healthy deliciousness!
Throughout the summer, Rebel mentors spend 12 hours hours a week mentoring at CCA. As mentors they facilitate the vision that young chefs have for their dish by guiding them through cooking tasks like chopping, dicing, slicing, sauteing, frying, blending, etc.
Young chefs in Cooking Crew Academy already have skills in those areas, but as mentors our job is to make sure that they are carrying out those tasks safely and timely. Overall, Rebel mentors interact with young chefs to encourage and teach healthy eating.
