30 Nov Guest Writer Spotlight: “Cup Foods, MN”
A poem by Guest Writer, Ava Szalay, 14 years old , Philadelphia
“All lives can’t matter until black lives do”
The words Cup Foods hang above our heads and flowers dot the street
George, I among others will fight for you
Words, names of others killed written in rainbow hues
And fists proclaiming justice exfoliated with Minnesotan heat
“All lives can’t matter until black lives do”
A father, a son, a friend and now a subject to
Brutality from those in blue who continue to mistreat
George, I among others will fight for you
Even today, the years of oppression still stick like glue
A black person being treated fairly shouldn’t merely be a special treat
“All lives can’t matter until black lives do”
I, a white girl won’t ever fully understand the true
Things you face among the daily, but the prejudice I will defeat
George, I among others will fight for you
Now is the time to strain your vocal chords and redo
This country’s views, ensuring history doesn’t repeat
“All lives can’t matter until black lives do”
George, I among others will fight for you
