Yesterday, the entire crew had a great big friendly competition at Comegys Elementary School. Before we did that, we all tried chickpeas with different spices. The purpose was to create our own barbecue sauce. It all revolved around a fun program that exists in the university assisted community schools- fruit stands. Twelve members showed up to take part in this dynamic throw down. The crew split into two teams ready to make healthy delicious treats.

We were given multiple sheets that covered operations, research, development, accounting, expenses, and sales. Each team got to start of with a hypothetical fifteen dollars in cash. First, both team collaborated amongst themselves about what they wanted to make. We had so many options including pineapples, melons, apples, frozen kale cubes, frozen bananas, berries, kiwi, yogurt, and apple juice. And of course, the Rebel bars, seeds, and cakes.
Check out the success with regards to our cakes in a blog post I wrote last week here: https://www.rvcrew.com/2016/06/rebel-cakes-delicious-desserts/
What are the goals?

  1. Create healthy deliciousness
  2. Make more money than you spend
  3. Have fun!

And by the end, we accomplished all this and more. One group made berry based smoothies, yogurt parfaits, and fruit salads. And the other team resorted to kale cube based smoothies, yogurt parfaits, and Rebel cakes. The yogurt parfaits were a strong sell for team one, while the all the cakes ended up being sold on team two. Both teams had a designer to create interesting promotional material.
After everything was made, it was time to sell. The staff in the school were each given $1-$4 based off of $.50 cards. The teams had to decide how they wanted to market it to the staff in the few short hours they had.

Both teams did not spend all the money. The result: One team made a profit of $2 while the other made less than a dollar. The bigger picture- we promoted healthy deliciousness to all the staff. We plan on doing this again in the future with cooking crew and fruit stands. The last day of school for West Philadelphia schools was yesterday. So tune in to see how it all works out with the kids during the summer.

Last week, we went to Huey Elementary School where we did our usual taste testing of carrots with hummus. After we were done, we gave the crew that helped us out taste samples of fur different types of rebel bars. A majority liked one certain bar. We took this back to the Rebel Crew, where we took the suggestions to keep improving the current Rebel bar. As a Penn mentor, I have worked on creating kid friendly surveys so we can get suggestions and take it back to the crew.
