Some of the students helping out with the taste-testing trying ur six new combinations of the ReBel Bar.

This morning, I walked into Samuel B Huey elementary school. Last week, we gave tons of children carrots and hummus to try. They learned a lot about carrots. We got around forty taste test cards. Today, we did the taste-testing again and many of the children were excited and familiar with what we were doing. Some of the kids came up to me and were able to tell me that carrots came in different colors including white, purple, and orange. Also, that carrots are good for the skin and provide better eyesight. Today, we got 104 taste test cards, which is amazing! I am excited and happy that the students enjoyed telling us what they liked about the carrots and what they learned. My favorite part was the drawings and poems on the back. At the end, the students that worked with us along with some members of the Rebel crew tasted and chose our favorites out of six combinations. This past week, we tried six combinations to help make the original ReBel Bar better and healthy for everyone! One the fun moments of the day was reading the poems. Here is one of my favorite poems:
Carrots. Carrots.
You are the best.
You are the best.
In the West.

Six combinations of the ReBel Bar.

This week in the kitchen, there were a lot of different activities going on, but we made it work. The students in fruit stand were demanded kale cubes so we worked on creating cubes for their smoothies as well as the classic bags of pineapple, strawberries, and grapes. I worked on working creating hummus that may be a potential product. This time, we used sweet potatoes.

Here is the hummus recipe that we tried yesterday in the kitchen:
2 cans of chickpeas
1 sweet potato
5 tablespoons of olive oil
2 tablespoons of tahini
½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper
¼ teaspoon of cumin
¼ teaspoon of paprika
¼ teaspoon of salt
½ of lemon
8 tablespoons of water

Every Thursday, the mentors get together before our crew meeting. It was beautiful outside. Today, we went to Clark Park where we discovered healthy deliciousness at the local farmer’s market. There was asparagus, fresh fruit pies, and peas. Our crew meeting met at Van Pelt. We started with improvisation, which was a lot of fun and made the environment more relaxing and fun. In our meeting, we tried some of the hummus that we tried making yesterday. Also, we had peas and strawberries. I love strawberries! And of course, we had the ReBel Bars.  Why not make meetings fun with healthy delicious food!

The peas added some green color to the brown table at our crew meeting.

Each week, I develop deeper relationships with the other ReBel crew members, which is great and looking forward to more amazing memories!
