16 Dec A business, a social enterprise
Rebel Ventures is a business and a social enterprise. All social enterprises are businesses, but not all businesses are social enterprises.
Let’s start simple. What is a business?
A business sells a product to a customer. Usually this is something the customer wants or needs, and solves some type of problem the customer has.
What are some of your favorite businesses? How about your favorite products? What problems do they solve?
Rebel Ventures sells healthy snacks like Rebel Bars and Rebel Seeds. When our customers get hungry, we solve this problem for them.
In order to create a product to sell, a business spends money. This is called the cost.
So you spend money on various costs to make your product. Now its time to sell it. All the money you make from selling your product is called your revenue.
To figure our how much money your business gets to take home at the end of the day, you need to subract your costs from your revenue. This total is called your profit. The equation to find profit is
revenue – costs = profit
A social enterprise is a business that makes money by doing good. Social enterprises sell products that solve problems that benefit our community.
Rebel Ventures is a social enterprise because the food we sell is good food- food that is nutritious, organic and local, and made with love by young people in our community.
A social enterprise needs to make money to run and also measures its success in more ways than just profit. Rebel Ventures measures it success in the number of healthy snacks it sells to kids, and also the number of skills mastered by our high school student crew.
