Intro to Rebel Photovoice

Our mission at Rebel Ventures is to create healthy deliciousness with kids in schools. As we work to accomplish this mission, we take a lot of pictures. These pictures document our progress, our victories, and our failures. We learn from the pictures, we are inspired by them. Each week a Rebel crew member in the Design department reviews all the pictures we took that week and organizes the best into an album we call Action Shots. The Photovoice section on our website highlights these actions shots. This is healthy deliciousness through our lens, our perspective.
alligator clap
July 5th was our first day of summer together as the full Rebel crew. We have 12 high school students, 4 Penn mentors, 3 mentors from the nonprofit Promise Corps, and two Rebel elders. Whenever we start something new at Rebel- a presentation, a skit, etc- we always do an ‘alligator clap’.

rebel staff meeting smiles
We create community by building stuff together. First we participated in skits to demonstrate the Rebel Values.

Then we built towers out of spaghetti, marshmallows, and tape. It was a glorious and an intense competition.

new product design
Next we built new products.

We ended writing and sharing poems titled ‘I am from…’ There’s no better sign of a good day than when everybody is smiling.

strawberries
For Day 2 and 3 of the Rebel summer we split the crew into two teams- Red and Blue. Both teams spend time in the Rebel Kitchen creating products and at Comegys Elementary School mentoring kids. We chopped and froze 32 pounds of strawberries, 16 pounds of blueberries, and 8 pineapples.

banana ice cream labels
We made 11 pints of banana ice cream and 60 Rebel Cakes.

painting labels mentorship
We painted 600 Rebel Bar labels and 300 #healthydeliciousness stickers.

We made 574 Rebel Bars and 42 Rebel Seeds.

At Comegys we began our work as mentors at Cooking Crew Academy (CCA). CCA is a project where kids work in teams to create meals and serve them to their peers. It is a competition. This week each team designed.

comegys knife safety
The young chefs of CCA and the RV crew also learned how to safely use a knife by each chopping 3 apples, passing a knife safety certification, and then serving an apple yogurt salad (spiced with cinnamon) to their 130 peers in the summer camp.

Our crew also helped the kids at Comegys create a store that deals in healthy deliciousness.

The Comegys Fruit Stand sells Rebel Bars, Seeds, Cakes, bags of fresh fruit, Banana Ice Cream, and smoothies made with Rebel Icy Colors (the fruit we chop and freeze in our kitchen).

Finally, we conducted product testing with the kids at Comegys, using the Rebel SnackGarden. This activity is an example of the Rebel Value ‘listening’. We work directly with our customers (kids in schools) to design healthy deliciousness with them and for them.

anya tasting comegys 2
We collected data on 3 products- the Rebel Cakes, and 2 R&D versions of the Rebel Bar (with different amounts of puffed brown rice added to the recipe). Kids filled out taste test cards that we collected and will analyze next week.

Our mission is to create healthy deliciousness with kids. We did a pretty good job in our first week, and next week will be better.
